Not specifically, but I guess it all comes together to shape how we think about what robots could do and look like, and how we feel about them and their potential future capabilities and roles. A lot of people say our rover looks a bit like Wall-E.

Haha, I haven’t seen much in the way of sci-fi underwater robots but maybe I’m watching the wrong films!! The manipulators (robotic arms) that we use on our robot did come from the space industry though, so maybe that counts?!

Are you a big sci-fi fan?

Unfortunately, not for my work directly (at least at the moment), but in general I think I’m inspired by Star Wars (C3PO, R2D2 and BB8) and – of course – Disney (WALL-E). I would like to work on a “companion” (and not just in form of Lego) like the ones mentioned in the future and they would definitely serve as an inspiration. 🙂

Not really as the robots I work on don’t look anything like sci fi to me

I suppose they look like large white jellyfish lol ( see profile pictures )

I enjoy watching sci fi and I like to see how the future is evolving to meet old sci fi expectations 😉
