For work experience at school I actually ended up in the Subsea 7 workshop testing some bits of equipment returned from offshore and making up kits for use on the job.

I was also lucky enough to get a summer placement when I was at university at Talisman Energy, which introduced me to working in the oil and gas industry.

I actually did a week at a local architect firm as I didn’t really know what engineering was at the time. I really enjoyed it there, but when I went I thought that architects were the people that work out how to make really cool buildings stand up effortlessly, or cool modern bridges that are beautiful. Turns out, that’s civil engineers!
Architects might have the idea of what they want the building to look like, but then they employ civil and structural engineers to work out what materials to use and how to construct it so that it will stand up! When I found that out I was a bit underwhelmed at the idea of being an architect, and much more interested in finding out more about engineering…

Back at school I did a two weeks internship at a fashion company as I wanted to be a fashion designer back then. The internship really helped me as I knew afterwards that I wouldn’t want to go into fashion, at least not with this company.

At university we had to do an internship for one semester, which I did at a company that develops car communication software. I really enjoyed that one and if I wouldn’t be here in the UK, I might actually work for them. 🙂
